In this class students will be introduced to the magic and science of natural dyes through surface design on cloth. Natural dyes are notoriously sensitive to shifting hues from a variety of factors including pH modification,
mordants used, tannins, and mixing with other natural colours. In this beginner friendly class we will harness this sensitivity to be used in our creative practice in an intentional yet playful way.
This is a fascinating practice to explore, where science and art converge, and Carly can’t wait to share it with you!
Skill Level: Beginner
Skill requirements: There are no prerequisites for this class
Must be aged 16+.
IN THIS WORKSHOP YOU WILL LEARN:
- An intro to natural dyes, their mordants, and their modifiers
- How to prepare fibres to receive and retain colour
- Dye safety and studio etiquette

Hands on how-to for making natural dye fabric paints and preparing a dye bath using natural dye extracts
- Explore using found objects, brushes, and handmade stencils/stamps to create one-of-a-kind patterns on cloth. Students are provided with an assortment of mark making objects and supplies. They are also welcome to bring their own if they please!
- A show and tell of surface design samples to spark curious questions and to give inspiration
- An instructional booklet full of resources to keep for future home projects
- A handmade and up-cycled bandana plus extra scrap fabric for testing patterns
Surface Design Class Includes:
**ALL MATERIALS ARE PROVIDED
- A handmade and upcycled bandana + extra scrap cloth for testing patterns is provided to each attendee.
- Natural dyes, mordant paints, gum tragacanth and other materials.
- Tools for crafting your own stamp or stencil to use in the class.
**Snacks and herbal tea are offered as a complimentary refreshment throughout the class.
Group size: We like to keep this workshop cozy and fun, so attendance is limited to 8 guests.
