FAQ

Here are a few questions we get asked a lot around here!

How do I contact you? When are you open?
Please see our Contact page.

Is there parking near The Makehouse Co-op?
Yes, we have parking right outside our shop in the Douglas Centre (both levels) and street parking on Burnside Road.

Do you sell gift certificates?
Yes! You can buy gift certificates online, over the phone or in our shop. They can be used towards workshops, fabric and notions either in the store or online.

Can I stack my discounts?
Unfortunately you can't combine discounts. For example, you can't use both your Smile points and a student discount or store-wide discount in the same transaction.

Can I donate fabric/notions/a sewing machine to you?
We are sometimes able to accept donations of quilting cotton for our children's classes. We ask that you kindly call us first to inquire. Please do not leave donations on our doorstep.

We do accept donations of sewing machines and sergers that are in good working order. These are generally passed on to young Makehouse students or customers who can't afford to buy a machine.

If you have other fabric to donate or a large quantity or you have unwanted notions, we suggest you get in touch with our friends at The Green Thimble! Check out their donation program here.

I want to buy a sewing machine. I don't know what kind of machine to get. Can you offer advice?
Yes! We can provide you with general advice about what types of machines might be suitable for you.

Do you sell sewing machines?
Our sewing machine mechanic, Bill Murray, refurbishes used sewing machines and sergers and we sell them in our store. Get in touch to find out what we have in stock!

Do you rent out your sewing machines?
No, unfortunately we can't lend out our sewing machines.

Can I come in and sew in your studio?
Maybe! "Open Studio" time is booked for experienced sewers who are able to work independently without instruction. During this time, our staff will be busy helping customers, filling orders and doing other store duties. If you feel that Open Studio is right for you, give us a ring on the weekend to inquire about any availability for the upcoming week. The cost for Open Studio time is $17.50/hour. If you need help with a project, you can book a private lesson instead, during which a teacher will be dedicated to helping you meet your sewing goals!

Do you host parties at The Makehouse Co-op?
Sometimes! Please contact classes@themakehouse.ca or call us at 236-475-8549 if you're interested.

Can I be a workshop instructor at The Makehouse Co-op?
We are always keen to hear from any skilled and friendly people able to run workshops. If you think you have what it takes, please email classes@themakehouse.ca with details of your work.

Will you hem/fix this hole in/take in these pants?
Nope! We'd love to teach you how to do it though so book a private lesson!
