Stitch by Stitch is a Summer Camp for sewing beginners aged 11-16. This fun camp gets your pre-teen/teen started learning the basics of how to use a sewing machine. Campers get to choose fun projects to build their skills on. At the end of the week, participants make a simple garment (pyjama pants or a skirt).
Skill requirements: Stitch by Stitch is geared towards total beginners. No previous experience necessary!
What we provide:
- fabric for the first three days
- sewing machines (if you don't have one)
- all tools, thread, and notions
What you provide:
- sewing machine (if you have one)
- 1.5 - 2.5m of soft quilting cotton (e.g. from Ruby Star Society) for the final garment project. Students are welcome to bring fabric from home or purchase it in the store. We offer a 20% student discount on all supplies or tools purchased during this camp.
Topics & Activities:
Day 1
- Introduction to using a sewing machine, including threading and making bobbins
- Cutting tutorial, including how to cut safely using scissors and a rotary cutter
- Learning about fabrics and fabric manipulation
- Design your own cushion cover or tote bag, choose fabric, and start the project
Day 2:
- Review use of a sewing machine
- Continue project from day 1.
Day 3:
- Review sewing machine basics, if needed.
- Finish first project.
- Start a simple backpack, if there's time.
Day 4:
- Design and cut out first garment project: skirt, pajama pants or pajama shorts
Day 5:
- Finish garment from day 4.
Equipment requirements: We highly encourage you to bring your own sewing machine, however if you don't own a machine, one will be provided for you. If you’d like to bring your home machine, please remember to bring the manual (and foot pedal/power cord).
Group size: Maximum 6
Snacks & Refreshments: We encourage you to send snacks and refreshments as it’s much easier to be creative when you have fuel for the brain!
