Learn to sew your own underwear in this 2-part workshop. Get over fears of working with stretch fabrics and elastics while making practical garments for yourself and your loved ones!
This wonderful workshop will take you through the process of making your first pair of underwear from start to finish. Choose from our selection of patterns before the workshop (see the full list below).
Skill Level: Advanced beginner
Skill requirements:
Couple of our 'Learn to Sew' series classes, Home Sewing Boot Camp (All under Beginner Sewing Workshops) OR basic sewing experience such as knowing how to thread and use a sewing machine, wind a bobbin, construct simple seams, and be familiar with sewing terminology such as "right sides of fabric together" and "seam allowance."
Must be aged 16+
**You must have previous experience sewing clothing and working on both sewing machine and sergers.
Please note you should arrive with your paper pattern pieces already traced/cut out in your chosen size!
Session 1 -
- Yay - you're here and you're going to make underwear!!!
- Introduction to working with stretch
- Introduction to elastics and their applications (fold-over, exposed trims and covered elastics)
- How to handle and cut stretch fabrics (using a rotary cutter or scissors - your choice)
- Introduction to using a serger for seam construction
Session 2 -
- How to create a hidden seams
- How to work with different types lingerie elastics
- How to use a coverstitch machine and twin needle on your sewing machine for hemming and applying lace or elastics
- Finishing techniques to finesses your underwear making
Material requirements:
You will need your pattern (see full list below) and fabrics for the first session. 1/2 meter of a cotton, or bamboo knit or stretch lace will cover your first pair of undies! If you wish to colour block, please purchase 2 contrasting fabrics to work with (these can be solids, stripes or prints - have some fun!!)
You can pick up your elastics and other notions here at the first class, as we would like to educate you about making good choices for finishing depending on the style you are making.

Equipment requirements: We highly encourage you to bring your own sewing machine, however if you don't own a machine, one will be provided for you. If you’d like to bring your home machine, please remember to bring the manual (and foot pedal/power cord) and arrive 10 minutes prior to the scheduled time.
