General Workshops

How do I book a workshop?
You can browse our workshops online and check availability. You can also pay online with a credit card or PayPal account. Alternatively you can select the ‘Pay Later’ option to pay for your workshop with a credit card over the phone at 778-430-6253. You can also visit us in person at our shop at 2950 Douglas Street.

Please note full payment is required at least 7 days in advance of the workshop.

What if I need to cancel my workshop?
Full, cleared payment is required prior to a workshop commencing. If you find yourself unable to attend your booking and it’s more than 7 days in advance, you can transfer to a future workshop free of charge. If cancellation is within 7 days of your workshop we are unable to offer a refund. You can always send some lucky friend in your place though – just let us know of the name change please. Alternatively you can rebook onto a future available workshop date, by paying an additional 50% of the workshop value. A full refund will be given if your workshop is cancelled by The Makehouse for any reason, or you can elect to attend an alternative workshop instead.

How many students are there in a workshop?
We like to keep our workshops cozy, so there are usually around 6 – 10 people, depending on the activity.

What should I bring?
Please check the workshop descriptions and reminders for details about what materials you need to bring for each workshop. We provide most of the tools including the use of our sewing machines.

Can I bring my own sewing machine?
You certainly can. Please just let us know in advance and arrive for your workshop 10 minutes early to set up.

What age range are the workshops for?
Our general adult workshops are for ages 16+. We have workshops specifically for children after-school and during school holidays for ages 8+. We also have workshops aimed for teens and tweens for ages 11+. You can also book a group for a tailor-made workshop or party!

I’ve never sewn before. Can I still come to a workshop?
You will want to start with one of our introductory sewing courses if you’ve never sewn before (or if it’s been a long time!) Our Sew a Tote Bag or Learn to Sew Cushions are both a great place to start. We also offer private lessons ($45 p/h), which can be tailored for total beginners!

Can I turn up to a workshop on the day?
All workshops must be booked in advance so that our instructors can be fully prepared. If you join our mailing list we’ll send you details of any last-minute availability. Or you can call on the morning of a desired workshop to see if we still have spaces.

Do I HAVE to book a workshop online?
Certainly not, you can telephone and book with a credit over the phone, or you can drop into our shop at 2950 Douglas Street (see opening hours) and pay in person with cash, cheque, credit or debit card.

Is there parking near The Makehouse?
Yes, we have parking right outside our shop in the Douglas Centre (both levels) and street parking on Burnside Road.

I want to do a workshop but I don’t see it listed on the website?
We’re always very keen to hear about new skills and workshops that you’d like to see included at The Makehouse. So please let us know if there’s something you’re eager to learn, and we’ll do our very best to include it for you, if we think it’s suitable of course! We also offer private lessons which can be tailored to most sewing goals.

Parties and Group Bookings

Do you host parties at The Makehouse?
Yes, we hold parties and group bookings at The Makehouse on a regular basis.

To organize your party at The Makehouse, please contact Jenny Ambrose jenny@themakehouse.ca or alternatively give us a call (778-430-6253).

Is my party deposit refundable?
We take a $50 deposit to secure your party with us. Once you book we then take the deposit and start spending money beyond administration costs, such as booking tutors and getting in supplies. As such, your deposit is non refundable so please be sure before you confirm your booking.

What happens if the number of guests in my party changes?
We book your party based on your estimated numbers. Don’t worry, if your numbers change between your initial booking and paying the final balance.

When is my final balance due?
The remaining balance is then due one week prior to your party, when you can confirm the number of guests that will be coming. However, we are unable to give refunds after this final payment has been made so it is always a good idea to double check your confirmed numbers before you pay!

Children’s Parties

What ages are your children parties suitable for?

Our children’s parties are for ages 7+.

Can we bring our own food to the children’s party?
You certainly can. We have some crockery, utensils (including a cake knife), and a cake stand (and of course a candle lighter) available to use. Please be sure to bring candles, napkins and anything else that you require.

Can we decorate The Makehouse ourselves for our party?
The Makehouse is always dressed for a party, but you’re welcome to decorate yourself for your, as long as you don’t do anything permanent. Please speak to a member of staff if you’re unsure about what you can or can’t do.

Is my party deposit refundable?
The $50 deposit which secures your party with us is non refundable, so please be sure before you confirm your booking. Thank you.

Can I be a workshop instructor at The Makehouse?
We are always keen to hear from any skilled and friendly people able to run workshops. If you think you have what it takes, please email with details of your work.

Can I sell my own handmade designs at The Makehouse?
Our main focus is on selling materials and make kits rather than finished goods. If you create DIY kits, we’d love to see them! We also occasionally hold events featuring local makers. Please sign up for our newsletter or reach out to find out more!

Can I buy gift certificates?
You can buy gift certificates online, over the phone or in our shop. They need to be redeemed within 12 months of purchase, and can be used against workshops, in our shop or on our online shop.

Where can I buy fabric and tools?
We sell a wide range of materials, tools and haberdashery supplies in our shop and on our website. If you’re enrolled in a workshop or course, you will receive a 20% discount on your supplies!
