Volunteer Librarian for The Makehouse

The Makehouse is looking for a volunteer librarian to help us better organize our huge collection of sewing, craft and needle point patterns and books. We have so many great resources, but we’ve not been able to allocate the time it would take to truly make this collection shine!

We need someone who can commit to helping us initially setting up the library in our new space (Burnside at Douglas Street) during the month of October. Once the library is set up, we would need a weekly check-in to stamp and categorize new books, make sure that things stay organized and send reminders to borrowers. The librarian would ideally be a person with a keen interest in sewing and crafting who likes to organize and has a couple of hours a week free. Our regular staff will be responsible for the records book to make sure that books coming in and out are accounted for. If you’re interested in this role, please email for more details about the role and perks!

Generations - Sewing Susan Vintage Ad

Introducing Generations – a series of workshops designed to put you in touch with other generations!

We are launching an new series of workshops on the first Saturday of each month from 1:30pm – 3:30pm.

The ‘Generations’ platform will feature a volunteer guest who will do an introductory workshop to share a skill or art form that has been passed down from another generation. We’ve already had someone interested in sharing the art of macrame for example. We have a large library resource (including lots of vintage sewing & crafting books!) which can be used as teaching aids and wherever possible we will try to donate the supplies and tools needed.

These workshops will be offered by donation directly to our hosts and kits related to the workshop can be sold directly to guests.

Generations Host Requirements:

  • Workshops must fit in to a 1.5-2 hour period
  • Be able to be taught around a table without the use of electricity
  • Hosts must have good working examples ready to share
  • Skills must not be conflict with our existing core workshop or courses

Dates available: Oct 7, Nov 4, Dec 2, Jan 13, Feb 3, Mar 3, Apr 7, May 5  & June 2

These workshops will take place in our new location at Unit #400 -2950 Douglas Street (just behind Lifestyle Markets).

The Makehouse is Moving – October 2017

Vintage moving truck filled with furniture

We are thrilled to announce that The Makehouse will be re-locating to the Douglas Shopping Centre (just behind Lifestyle Markets) this October!

You might have heard the news that our block of Fort Street is going to be re-developed in the new year. Well, the rumours are true and we’ve taken this as an opportunity to offer an enhanced customer experience. Our new location will offer more space for both retail and classroom, beautiful (and ample) natural light, an outdoor patio area and free customer parking!

We will also be launching a member-based sewing studio, which will be separate from our teaching area. More details about this new feature are coming soon! We welcome your suggestions in regards to equipment and tools you would like to see in the work room. Please email jenny (@) or call 778-430-MAKE (6253).

All scheduled workshops and courses beyond October will be located at Unit #400 -2950 Douglas Street. It will be business as usual at 833 1/2 Fort Street until the end of September.

You can stay up to date via our newsletter and social media outlets, or come on by the shop and talk to us, the good old fashioned way!
